Chromacity Spark OPO

The Spark OPO provides exceptional tunability and power across the near-infrared, making it an ideal light source for a wide range of application areas (from multi-photon microscopy to spectroscopy). Our ultrafast optical parametric oscillator technology can generate light from 1.4 µm to 4.2 µm with picosecond pulsewidths. With a fully integrated pump source it is able to  deliver high average power at both the signal and idler wavelengths with exceptional reliability. We also provide access to the fixed wavelength pump light, making it suitable for CARS microscopy.

Broad wavelength coverage

The Chromacity Spark OPO system delivers light over three distinct wavelength bands. Pump light is incident on a non-linear OPO crystal which in turn generates light across 1.4 µm – 1.9 µm (signal) and 2.2 µm – 4.2 µm (idler). Residual pump light at a fixed wavelength of 1040 nm can also be accessed. For spectroscopy applications and CARS microscopy there is often a need to tune to several specific wavelengths. This can be achieved through our intuitive user interface. The ability to generate light at these longer infrared wavelengths is key to identifying a wide range of solids, liquids, gases that produce complex chemical signatures.

Separate output ports

The Chromacity Spark OPO delivers the signal, idler and pump light through three separate free space output ports. This provides the end user with the flexibility to dictate the beam path of each beam. There is no need to use expensive optics to separate the signal from the idler.

Faster results

Chromacity has always had the vision of providing laser systems that require the minimal amount of user intervention. To this end, the Chromacity Spark OPO doesn’t need time to warm up and doesn’t require alignment, allowing you to devote your time to delivering results.

Pulse duration vs spectral bandwidth

Having listened to customer requirements, the Chromacity Spark OPO delivers light with pulse durations of 1ps in both the signal and the idler wavelengths. This generates a suitably narrow spectral bandwidth that meets the needs of many spectroscopic applications. If the spectral output is too broad is is often difficult to differentiate between different chemical signatures.

High average power

Using our proprietary fully integrated high average power, optical pump technology (Spark 1040) we have the ability to deliver high average powers at both signal and idler wavelengths. This improves the signal to noise ratio of any experiment. In the signal range up to 800 mW can be generated. In the idler up to 250 mW can be achieved. We acknowledge that for many experiments (particularly gas spectroscopy) optical power can be a key consideration. Upon request, we have the ability to tailor the peak of the output power at specific wavelengths. In addition, up to 500 mW of residual pump light (at a fixed wavelength of 1040 nm) can also be accessed.

Small footprint

Traditional OPO laser systems can be extremely bulky units that take up significant laboratory space. In addition, there is often the requirement to also accommodate a separate pump source. The system has been engineered into a compact footprint, and incorporates its own pump source, making it suitable for even the smallest work environment. The Chromacity Spark OPO can replace traditional ultrafast systems and free up valuable space on a lab bench.

Low cost of ownership

Removing the complexities of traditional ultrafast laser systems, while maintaining the high performance characteristics that are expected by the photonics industry has allowed us to develop a system that can be acquired at a low cost of ownership.

Exceptional reliability

Machined from a single block of high-grade aluminum, the Chromacity Spark OPO has been designed specifically to deliver three output beams with an outstanding level of reliability. This has been brought about, in part, by fully integrating the pump source, and removing the need for water cooling.


An intuitive web-based user-interface allows for easy control of the Spark OPO across several. Specific wavelengths can be easily set via this interface. This relaxes the constraints of having to be near the laser system to use it.

Excellent beam quality

With a linearly polarized output and an M2 < 1.2, the Chromacity Spark OPO delivers a beam quality across all three output ports that can be easily re-shaped and aligned into almost all experimental setups and microscope systems.

Easy integration

The Spark OPO operates at a pulse repetition frequency of 100 MHz, making it easy to integrate with a range of diagnostic equipment.
